The South Africa-Europe iron-ore trade route could go green as soon as 2029 and scale toward full decarbonisation by 2035, according to a study released by the Global Maritime Forum. The feasibility study, produced in collaboration with a consortium created in 2023 – which includes Anglo American, CMB.TECH, Freeport Saldanha, VUKA Marine, and ENGIE – said the corridor linking Saldanha Bay in the Western Cape to the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands would be one of the first Global South-to-North green shipping routes.

Assmang, which is jointly owned by African Rainbow Minerals (ARM) and Assore South Africa, has decided to place its Beeshoek iron-ore mine, in the Northern Cape, on care and maintenance, with about 622 permanent employees to be retrenched with effect from November 30.
